We were very involved in every aspect of our custom home on the Southern California coast. Early 2006, as our architect was ready to work with a builder and submit plans to the coastal commission we began our search for a custom home builder.

We researched and were very diligent about finding and interviewing some very experienced and respected General Contractors.

The competition was excellent, all showing us beautifully built past homes as well as projects underway along the coastline and inland.  All were very costly and complicated projects in different ways.

Our site was also complicated, hillside requiring over 65 caissons to support a pool and other structures. We also had engineering requirements for earthquakes. Our home was to take several years to build, and we knew we wanted a great team to work with.

Our choice was  Lang Construction for two reasons:

Chuck Lang(owner) and Rip Patton (job superintendent) were the best TEAM. Chuck, with years of experience, had built amazing homes, restorations, remodels, compounds…and he still had great relationships with the homeowners. He also had talented (award-winning..) architects who had referred their clients to him.

The main strength Chuck Lang had for us was Rip Patton…as Rip was the one to lead and manage the subs. We saw that those skilled subcontractors were very loyal to Rip and Chuck.  We hadn’t seen as good a “Team”, we knew Rip would be on-site daily, and knew they would always be there years later too if and when needed.

Knowing that we would be “dropping by” the job site very often we wanted to be unobtrusive, but feel comfortable with the crew and progress.  Our choice of builder proved to be great as we saw Rip in action… intelligent, calm and energetic, hands-on,  saw him head off problems, knew the house better than anyone!  Rip also saw the importance of respecting the neighbors. We have often heard a nice Rip story from them.

Fast forward 16 years and Rip is still our go-to person if needed. Our big notebook Rip gave us included contact info. for all subs, tradespeople, fixtures…

If  I can’t reach a contact (some retire or move), I know I can contact  Rip with my need, he'll send me a contact, and then he follows through with me. He has often has come over to troubleshoot with or without a sub.  Over the years we have met many subs and builders who know or know of Rip… all have high regard for him as a builder and a person.

We are happy Rip is starting his own company, and know that Chuck Lang is giving his blessing and appreciation as well for all the years they were together.. including latter years as Chuck was stepping aside and Rip was finding and running the projects.
